Today we took a field trip to the Mayo Performing Arts Center to see a production of The Freedom Train. It was about Harriet Tubman and how she became a conductor on the Underground Railroad. It was very well done. The kids took a lot of it. They really got a sense of who Harriet Tubman was and why what she did was so amazing. We all thought it was fascinating that she helped 300 slaves make their way North to freedom and that everyone she ever helped made it to the North. They learned a little bit about the codewords used and the signs to look for to know if a home is friendly. On the car ride afterwards we had a discussion about how not all slaves who ran made it to freedom. Many were captured and returned to their owners. Many were then crippled so they couldn't run again or sold to a plantation further south.
Tonight we continued our nature study by observing a barn owl (http://www.sportsmansparadiseonline.com/Live_Owl_Nest_Box_Cam.html). We are not quite patiently waiting for the owlets to hatch. We did get to observe her eating a rat. Fascinating and gross at the same time. The life cycle at work.
