Yesterday the kids really had a fun time discussing The Mixed Up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler. You could tell who really loved the book and who tolerated the experience from their participation. Little Miss was very enthused and participated greatly. Mister B (who has read the book 3 times and seen the play 2x) was less enthused. His contribution was in the form of the occasional wisecrack. I can't say he enjoyed our discussion afterward.
They talked about if they would be able to pull off living in the museum now. A unanimous No. Too many cameras, too many alarms, too many guards.
They thought Claudia made a wise choice in bringing her brother with the money. None of us have been able to figure out how he cheated at the card game war. Other then thinking he must stack the deck or hide cards up his sleeve the kids were stumped. For when would he have the opportunity to do these things. Appropriate horror was expressed over the fact that he cheats his best friend. How awful is that? Your best friend and you cheat at cards for money.
Some discussion about dialogue and how it is a short book. Not a lot of time for in-depth character development yet the author gives us a feel for the character.
The book is one of our favorites and we are looking forward to taking our field trip to the museum.
